COLOMBIAN TRADEMARK OFFICE ISSUES THE REPORT ON THE INFORMATION ON INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY IN COLOMBIA
The Colombian Trademark Office issued the Report on information on Intellectual Property in Colombia this past September 11th, 2017. The purpose of this report was to make a comprehensive analysis on the state of intellectual property in Colombia for the period between 2000 and 2016, thanks to the joint efforts of different national and international entities such as the Colombian Trademark Office, the Colombian National Copyright Office, the Colombian Agricultural Institute, and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), among others.
As part of the report’s findings, data evidenced that there were 43,006 applications for trademarks and other distinctive signs in 2016 with approximately 60% of the applicants residing in Colombia. On the other hand, the number of applications filed in connection with new creations (patents, utility models, industrial designs etc.) were of 3,009 in the same year where approximately 80% of the applications were foreigners, a phenomenon that remains common in the region. Thus, in both cases, there was an increasing trend for the analyzed period.
